Hadi Tabatabai was born in Iran and now lives in San Francisco, CA with his family.
The artist's primary focus is that of process - the actual creation of the art. He
began as an artist by creating drawings where he simply repeated the same
shape over and over again. Sometimes, he felt that the drawing was complete
within minutes or hours. Other times, he would draw the same shape for days.
The artist has an intuitive sense of when he has exhausted certain subject
matter.

In creating his elegant paintings, Tabatabai works with new materials not usually
used in painting. For example, the artist uses tread. This thread provides both
linear qualities, but also emphasizes the surface of the painting ant the related
depth. The thread may hover above the surface by only 1/16 of an inch, but the
shadows created, as well as foreground/background create dimension to what,
at first glance looks like a flat two-dimensional piece of art.

He addresses similar issues by use of grout - a surface that absorbs light and
beeswax, a surface that absorbs light but also creates a luminous glow.

Tabatabai addresses important aspects of painting by challenging the viewer to
look closer and closer at the materials used and their impact on the art.

He is a master at precision. Although the work might be machine made, Tabatabai
has worked meticulously. The viewer relates to the work on various levels and
does not tire of the "simple" elements of the paintings. The artist's work presents
an interesting new dimension to the earlier minimalist artists presented in Marfa.
